Assassin's Creed Shadows is the next, fourteenth full-fledged instalment of the popular action-adventure game series Assassin’s Creed, developed and published by Ubisoft. The team from Quebec is responsible for creating this part.
Story
The latest Assassin’s Creed is set in the times of Feudal Japan, and the story begins exactly in 1579, at the beginning of the period known as Azuchi-Momoyama — the end of the Sengoku era, which was a period of a long and exhausting civil war in Japan.
As in other instalments of the game, the story is based on real events and true characters — one of them being Oda Nobunaga, a daimyō (powerful Japanese magnate) who effectively dealt with the Takeda samurai clan. In the game, we also have the opportunity to directly observe the historical assault by Nobunaga on the Iga province in 1581.
We will traverse real regions of central Japan, including Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and the previously mentioned Iga province.
It is also worth mentioning that the time in which the game is set is also the period when Portuguese traders and Jesuit missionaries began arriving in Japan. This led to significant technological advancements — with new weapons such as long rifles and cannons appearing in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Gameplay
Assassin's Creed Shadows, like the previous instalments of the series, is an action-adventure game with stealth elements. We can explore the world freely, but some missions and activities will require sneaking and avoiding confrontation or silently eliminating enemies. There are also plenty of action-packed and dynamic runs combined with parkour. Interestingly, the developers have also introduced the ability to crawl in this title!
This game offers an open world, similar in size to that in Origins. Missions are non-linear, allowing players more freedom in both exploring the story and eliminating targets.
While many instalments of the series featured dual protagonists — the modern-day one and the one whose life we relived in the ANIMUS — this time, the developers offer a new approach. As we traverse Feudal Japan, we will be able to play as two characters: Yasuke, an African samurai inspired by the real historical figure of the same name, and Naoe, a female shinobi.
